The hill, situated in the Žižkov neighborhood of Prague 3, is not as frequented by tourists as Petrin Hill due to its distance from the city center and limited accessibility. However, its breathtaking vistas make it a worthwhile excursion. Overlooking the Žižkov and Karlín neighborhoods, as well as the old city, Vitkov Hill offers a unique perspective of Prague’s beauty. Brief History
Vitkov Hill, nestled away from the hustle and bustle of central Prague, offers a serene escape with stunning panoramic views of the city. Named after Prague councilor Vítek z Hory, who owned vineyards on its slopes during the 15th century, Vitkov Hill holds a rich historical significance. It was here, on July 14, 1420, that the Hussite forces, led by Jan Žižka, secured a decisive victory against the Crusaders, forever marking the area as Žižkov.
How to Get There
Vitkov Hill can be accessed from either the Karlín or Žižkov neighborhoods. While both routes involve a moderate uphill climb, starting from Hartigova Street or the Ohrada station in Žižkov can make the ascent easier, requiring just a 10-minute hike to the top. Visitors can then descend towards the Karlín neighborhood and the military museum.
Important Notes:
The ascent to Vitkov Hill is steep but not overly strenuous.

What Can Be Found There
Statue of Jan Žižka
At the hill’s peak stands the imposing statue of Jan Žižka, one of the largest equestrian statues globally. Crafted by Prof. Bohumil Kafka between 1931 and 1941, this bronze monument commemorates the Hussite victory at the Battle of Vitkov. The statue offers stunning views of Prague.
The National Museum
On top of Vitkov Hill, this museum was built between 1928 and 1938 and features both historical exhibits and a café with city views. While entry fees apply, visitors can still enjoy the panoramic vistas from outside the museum.
Tip: Don’t miss the unobstructed views from the National Monument.
