The branch is located in Prague city center (near Wenceslas Square), so it is worth going there on foot. If you’re coming from further away, take the metro to Můstek station and walk 5 minutes towards the National Museum. Jindřišská Street will be on your left.

What You Will Find in the Museum?
The entrance hall is a stunning glass-covered space, originally an inner yard where mail buses arrived. You’ll see beautiful paintings on the walls and a gallery featuring historical photographs and mailboxes. Today, only one wing is used for regular postal services, while the other wings are dedicated to displays.

A Bit of History
The architect Antonin Brandner built the post office building between 1871 and 1874. Initially a three-story structure, it was expanded to four floors in 1922. The post office moved here with the Prague 1 post office in 1873. Over the years, the building has been renovated and restored multiple times, and in 1998, it was declared a national cultural monument.
Interesting Facts
The General Post Office is connected to the Prague Pipeline postal system, the only existing municipal postal system in the world.
The system, which started in 1899, has a route length of 50 kilometers. Initially used for sending telegrams, it later expanded to include packages and even had private connections.
During World War II, it was used to maintain communication between besieged buildings. In 2002, a flood caused a temporary closure of the system.
There are approximately 1,780 mailboxes in the building.
