Personal Recommendation: Because the wall is in a central area of Prague, I think it’s worth visiting for its symbolism and vibrant colors. The wall offers a refreshing change from the rest of the area. However, you shouldn’t spend too much time here. Instead, include it as a part of your walk between Prague’s main attractions.

A Bit of History
The John Lennon Wall began in 1980 when Czech artists painted the first mural in honor of John Lennon and his music right after he died.
More people soon followed, using the wall as a silent protest against the communist regime that ruled the Czech Republic until 1989.
During the Velvet Revolution in November 1989, the wall became a gathering place for protesters.
Before 1989, police prosecuted anyone who wrote messages or painted on the wall, and the artwork was immediately removed.
After 1990, the wall and the surrounding buildings were returned to the Knights of the Maltese Cross. They decided to restore the wall and allow paintings and messages to continue.
In 2014, the wall was plastered overnight to stop its activity, but it was soon reopened for artists.
In March 2019, artists were invited to create paintings to mark the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. They created portraits of John Lennon and Vaclav Havel (the first president after 1989). However environmental activists destroyed this artwork a few weeks later by writing their slogans on it. Since then, only licensed artists can paint on the wall.
